NELSON: We Still Can Do It…

Nearly everyone has heard the term: ” It’s all about winning,” and that has been a popular phrase circulating the Nelson Pupils of the School during the course of the Sports Festival Week.

Yes, from Saturday 24th to the following Friday, Flegg High School held it’s 18th Sports Festival and hasn’t it been exciting. As many of our competitors know, the main objective of this very popular event is about obtaining the house points. In fact, probably the most hardest part of this event for Nelson was actually getting these crucial points and after our victory last year, one wondered whether we would continue this champion record for another year.

What Nelson has to remember is that we entered in every event with a positve attitude. This is key for anything in life and alongside this, Nelson worked as a team ensuring that nearly everyone participated in one aspect of the festival.

I have never really been interested in sports outside school PE Lessons. Probably, a factor that has contributed to this statement is the fact that at a very early age, I was constantly reminded how my English skills such as: knowing your numbers and alphabet, were very substantial before going to primary school. Therefore, sports and the Sporting news at that time never occured to be of any significance. However, during breaks of my education , sometimes my Dad and I would go on a bikeride or maybe a walk around the rural area of our village, but it never really resulted in me getting fascinated in any sports and I continued my life this way. Until only a couple of years ago, exercise was not on the top of my list of favourite pastimes but I do remember going to jujitso lessons and I also recall going to The Great Yarmouth Swimming Club Junior Squad. Recently, I have been moved up into the Senior Squad. Moreover, this actually meant that I would be attending more Gala performances representing Great Yarmouth in many events. For me this was my first big step for my Sporting life and I still regularly train twice a week.

The only reason why I mention my early sporting life is that I never realised how important sport is before I joined Flegg High School. The PE Department has made a great credit to the School, especially, may I say, the Year 8s. And competitions like this one have really inspired many new Nelson pupils, like myself, to continue with participating in the Sports regions of the school.

The sports festival, unfortunately took place when the Year 10 pupils were on Work Experience: thus this had a big effect on the results as many of Nelsons most sporting ambitious people are Year 10s. Not for one minute are we blaming the Year 10s; we are only saying that this was a contributory factor to our overall result.

Despite coming last in the Sports festival, you may be interested in other results concerning Year points. I have the information to tell you that in this annual competition, Year 8 scored a total of 1007 points resulting in Nelson coming 3rd in Year 8. For Year 9, Nelson managed to secure the 3rd position yet again, after recieving 609 points for their brilliant efforts during the course of the week. Of course, Year 10 were not partaking in the competition which only leaves the Year 11s. Unfortunatly, with only 95 points, the Nelson Year 11 pupils had to accept the position of 4th place. You may not be interested in the overall results of the Sports Festival and you may be feeling great disappointment, but let me tell you that we were only 73 points less than 3rd place, Britten. Just think, if we got another 74 points, maybe we would have come in 3rd position! As aforementioned, Britten came in 3rd place, Martin coming 2nd place with 2068 points and finally Julian gained 1st place with a total of 2078 points.

Nelson, we must not look at this as a fail. We have definitely not failed because we have the potential to get that 1st place again. We just have to keep that positive attitude and maintain this teamworkship. If we persist with these pointers, we can go a long way.

Thankyou and Well Done to all Nelson Competitiors. It has been very tough this year what with Work Experience and the confusion with the building work and as the Nelson Journalist I would like to say a big Well Done to Mr Young( coincidently a member of Nelson House!!!) and the PE Department who orgainsed this event from the very start. Thankyou very much…

May our future contests be both successful and as fun as this one.
